The Application Process for Septic Systems

An original application for Residential On-Site Sewage Disposal System (NO PHOTO COPIES OR FAXED COPIES ARE ACCEPTED) must be completed and submitted to Hancock County Health Department before your building site can be evaluated by this department. You may request that the soil borings be performed by this office, or you can have the soil borings done by a qualified private consultant. Please indicate your preference on the bottom line of page one.

Once we receive your application, we will conduct the soil boring where indicated on the drawing. If you would like to be present during the soil boring evaluation please tell our staff at the time the application is submitted. The soil boring evaluation will be completed within approximately 7 to 10 days after the application is submitted.

If you are having soil borings conducted to buy the property and want to know the results for this purpose please call our office 10 days after application submittal. We can tell you over the phone what the soils evaluation qualified for, but, soil borings are NOT the only determining factor that must be considered when evaluating a lot for suitability for an On-Site Sewage Disposal System.

After the soil borings are completed an ON-SITE MEETING with the septic installer will have to be arranged. To set up an ON-SITE MEETING, please have your septic installer call our office. We are in the office between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Keep in mind that WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETELY PROCESS YOUR APPLICATION UNTIL WE HAVE ALL THE INFORMATION REQUESTED ON THE APPLICATION.

The Soil Borings and On-Site Meeting must be completed before a building permit, improvement location permit, or a septic permit can be issued. The application fee is $275.00 if we are to do the soil borings, and $50.00 if the soil borings are done elsewhere. Please make the check payable to: Hancock County Health Department. Your application can be hand delivered or mailed to the following address:

Hancock County Health Department
111 American Legion Place, Room #150
Greenfield, IN 46140

The fee for Septic Permits is $50.00. s A plot plan (18” x 24” size at a scale of 1” – 20’ or 1” – 40’) is required. We also require a floor plan of your house indicating the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

Septic Permits are issued between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. or by appointment only.
