Vote Centers
During a regularly schedule meeting of the Hancock County Election Board, the Board unanimously voted to establish a steering committee to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of becoming a Vote Center Community. Furthermore, the Hancock County Commissioners and Council have endorsed and encouraged the Election Division to research the opportunity to bring the convenience of Vote Centers to Hancock County.
Senate Enrolled Act Number 32 enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana added a new section that would allow for Vote Centers to be expanded beyond the original three pilot communities. Before Hancock County can become a Vote Center Community, Public Hearing and Input will be taken, Further, the Hancock County Election Board must unanimously approve the Vote Center Plan. There is currently no intent to bring Vote Centers to Hancock County until the 2014 election cycle.
The intent of this web page is to provide constituents with the resources and reference materials need to become an informed voter as it pertains to the Vote Center method of voting. The State of Indiana’s Election page has many good articles including a link to the Ball State University study which suggests that Hancock County would save an estimated $9,000 per year if the switch were to be made to Vote Centers.
Vote Centers Work for Indiana
One Vote Center for every 10,000 registered voters is required by law. Vote Centers utilize the Internet to access a computerized electronic poll book which reduces human error and immediately flags the poll worker if the elector attempts to vote at more than one Vote Center. Vote Centers must have sufficient parking and be ADA Compliant to allow all voters the right to vote.
Ideally, Vote Centers are established in large community type center that will accommodate a large number of voters and reduce the long lines that can be experienced at some precincts. It is the responsibility of the Hancock County Clerk – Election Division to insure access to the public to exercise their right to vote in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible.
