Marriage License

To apply here for your marriage license, either the bride or the groom must be a legal resident of Hancock County. Or if both bride and groom live out of state, they apply here only if they are getting married in Hancock County.

Both bride and groom must be 18 years of age.

The fee for your marriage license is $20.00 cash or money order ONLY!

Both bride and groom need to come in together. Each need their birth certificates, the originals or a CERTIFIED copy from the county where they were born. If the birth certificate does not give their parents' full names, where they were born, and the mother's maiden name, the applicants will need to provide that information. We will accept your drivers license if you do not have your birth certificate. However, EVERYTHING on your drivers license must be correct - including your address.

When applying, the bride and groom need to be in our office by 3:30 p.m. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. You will leave with everything you need to get married - there is no waiting period required.

The marriage license is valid for 60 days.

A wedding ceremony may be performed by a licensed minister, the Mayor of Greenfield, a Clerk-Treasurer of one of our towns, the County Clerk, or a judge. You must call and make an appointment with them to perform the wedding. There is not a Justice of the Peace available at our office.

For a bride or groom under the age of 18, call our office at (317) 477-1109 and ask for the Marriage Applications Clerk to find out the requirements.
