Marriage License
To apply here for your marriage license, either the bride or the
groom must be a legal resident of Hancock County. Or if both bride
and groom live out of state, they apply here only if they are
getting married in Hancock County.
Both bride and groom must be 18 years of age.
The fee for your marriage license is $20.00 for County Residents or $62.00 for out-of-state applicants .
CASH OR MONEY ORDER ONLY
Both bride and groom need to come in together. Each need their
birth certificates, the originals or a CERTIFIED copy from the
county where they were born. If the birth certificate does not
give their parents' full names, where they were born, and the
mother's maiden name, the applicants will need to provide that
information. We will accept your drivers license if you do not have your birth certificate. However, EVERYTHING on your drivers license must be correct - including your address.
When applying, the bride and groom need to be in our office by 3:30 p.m. It takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. You will leave with everything you need to get married - there is no waiting period required.
The marriage license is valid for 60 days.
Pursuant to IC 31-11-6-1 the following people are authorized to solemnize marriages:
(1) A member of the clergy of a religious organization (even if the cleric does not perform religious functions for an
individual congregation), such as a minister of the gospel, a priest, a bishop, an archbishop, or a rabbi.
(2) a Judge
(3) A Mayor, within the mayor's county
(4) A clerk or a clerk-treasurer of a city or town, within a county in which the city or town is located
(5) A clerk of the circuit court
(6) The Friends Church, in accordance with the rules of the Friends Church
(7) The German Baptists, in accordance with the rules of their society
(8) The Bahai faith, in accordance with the rules of the Bahai faith
(9) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in accordance with the rules of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
(10) An imam of a masjid (mosque), in accordance with the rules of the religion of Islam
The Clerk of Hancock County does NOT perform ceremonies. There is no Judge or Justice of the Peace in Hancock County that performs ceremonies either.

To Obtain a Certified Copy of a Marriage
License:
Our office would have your marriage recorded
here only if you applied here for your license. To obtain a certified
copy of your marriage license, send $2.00 payable to the Hancock
County Clerk. Along with your request, include the groom's name,
the bride's maiden name, the date the marriage took place, and
the address where you want us to mail the certified copy. PERSONAL CHECKS ARE NOT ACCEPTED!!!
