Hancock County Cemetery Commission
“Show me the manner in which a
nation or community cares for its dead and I will measure with
mathematical exactness the tender mercies of its people, their
respect for the laws of the land, and their loyalty to high
ideals.”
William Gladstone – 3 times
Prime Minister of England
The Pioneer Cemetery Commission locates,
repairs and maintains the county’s abandoned Pioneer
Cemeteries. There are currently 92 known cemeteries in Hancock
County.
The Hancock County Pioneer Cemetery Commission
is responsible for cemeteries where:
- No funds or sources of funds for reasonable
maintenance;
- A cemetery has suffered neglect and deterioration;
- The cemetery may be the burial grounds for
Indiana Pioneer leaders or Veterans of an American
war, including the Revolutionary War; and
- The cemetery must have been established
before 1850.
Locating, restoring, and maintaining Pioneer Cemeteries requires
a financial commitment and County Government cannot afford this
burden. The Pioneer Cemetery Commission depends on the generosity
of volunteers and donations to attain the goals they have set.
All donations go toward the restoration work as commission members
are not compensated for their time.
Volunteers are also needed in these efforts.
Please attend a Cemetery Commission Meeting. Meetings are held
on the first Monday of each month in the Courthouse Annex in
the Commissioners’ Court
at 7:00 p.m.
Pioneer Cemeteries are one of the most unique
historic landmarks we have. Please help us to preserve them before
they are lost to our future generations, and us forever. s
